Artist Reception - Phillip K Smith III Outside In / Inside Out at Hexton Gallery
Courtesy of Hexton Gallery
Please join us for an exhibition reception of Outside In / Inside Out with artist Phillip K Smith III at Hexton Gallery
In his first solo exhibition at Hexton Gallery, Southern California-based artist Phillip K. Smith III presents a new series of elusive, ephemeral wall sculptures that rest somewhere between traditional painting and the transformative power of colored light. Each sculpture changes at an imperceptible pace, from reflective surfaces to varying shades of color as determined by Smith’s elegantly designed orchestration. The dialogue between color and reflection has an unhinging effect, transporting the viewer from a known reality to one suspended within Colorado’s palpably thin air.
Perhaps best known for his large-scale public installations, Smith’s show at Hexton reveals a more intimate look at the artist. He focuses his vision on transforming domestic environments into spaces bathed in light, all the while inviting the outside in. Natural or ambient light is reflected back at the viewer across Smith’s mirrored surfaces while color projects outward from the inside.
Open to all ticket holders. Registration is not required for this event.

Private Tour of The Resnick Center for Herbert Bayer Studies
Photo: Brent Moss
Intersect VIPs are invited to attend an exclusive private tour of The Resnick Center for Herbert Bayer Studies ("The Bayer Center"), a new art exhibition space located on the historic campus of the Aspen Institute in Aspen. Art tours last approximately 60 minutes and include a guided overview of our galleries and our current exhibition, Concept of a Visualist: Herbert Bayer’s World Geo-Graphic Atlas.
This exhibit, which will be on view in the Resnick Center for Herbert Bayer Studies, examines Herbert Bayer’s 1953 World Geo-Graphic Atlas, a landmark work of visual education and modernist design. Commissioned by Walter Paepcke to mark the twenty-fifth anniversary of Container Corporation of America, the World Geo-Graphic Atlas was first presented at the 1953 International Design Conference at the Aspen Institute. In the seventy years since its publication, the atlas has come to occupy a key place within graphic design history. Characterized by Bayer as “the concept of a ‘visualist,’” the work’s imaginative approach to information design transformed the look and character of subsequent geographic atlases and popular scientific illustration. Its overarching message, moreover, proved to be prescient, with its emphasis on conserving natural resources and its warnings of potential environmental catastrophe. Marking the seventieth anniversary of the atlas’s publication, this is the first exhibition devoted to this groundbreaking and influential work.
This is a VIP event (VIP/All Access Pass required).
