About the film:
“Time and Other Materials” is a captivating exploration into the minds and hearts of five accomplished artists. Each with their unique perspective and medium - be it animation, ceramics, installation art, or large-scale sculpture - they unveil their inner worlds through a series of intimate studio sessions. This revealing documentary delves into their collective need to create and connect, not only with each other but with the broader world and beyond. Emphasizing themes such as discovery, mystery, femininity, and the vision of a better future, the film illustrates what it truly means to live a life devoted to creativity. Through five individual chapters filled with personal reflections and artistic processes, the documentary highlights the profound significance of art for both its creators and audience.

“Time and Other Materials” was the winner of the Austin International Art Festival in May 2026, the official selection of 2025 LA Femme International Film Festival, a nominee of the New York Independent Art Film Fest in 2025, the official selection of the 2025 Montreal Women Film Festival.

The film features the following Colorado-based artists:
Stacey Steers
Stacey’s labor-intensive films are carefully composed of thousands of handmade works on paper. They employ images appropriated from early cinematic sources to build experimental narratives inviting reflection and contemplation. 

Ana María Hernando
As a multidisciplinary artist Ana María’s work explores the sacred feminine and its power, questioning the long-imposed labels of decorative, inconsequential and superficial that have been historically equated to the art of women. 

In 2024, the Red Brick Center for the Arts exhibited Hernando’s work, My Longing Doesn’t Quiet / Mi añoranza no se calla, featuring sculptural installations in Wagner Park and Rubey Park alongside recordings of her poems. These works, rooted in a sense of abundance, spoke to an unstoppable life force, one that connects us to nature and to one another.

Kim Dickey
Kim’s ceramic work explores how we construct meaning through the objects and environments we create, blending psychological space with theatrical artifice to invite reverie and reflection. 

Martha Russo
All of Martha’s work is purposefully obscure. Her sculptures and installations are just out of the grasp of language and, thus, bring us back to our rudimentary way of collecting information, namely, through the senses and the body. The work touches on the raw, the visceral, the nerves, murmuring up through the body to make a time and place for contemplation and reflection about our basic, biological humanness. 

Rebecca DiDomenico
Rebecca’s work explores the reinvention of natural environments as acts of illumination and care. By reimagining these fragile systems and wild spaces, she hopes to draw attention to the urgent need to protect what remains, as one would a beloved ancestor or small child.

Each year, Intersect Aspen transforms the Aspen Ice Garden into Aspen’s largest gallery setting. Intersect Aspen is proud to honor Aspen Community Foundation as its primary beneficiary once again this year. New this year, select artworks will contribute 15 percent of proceeds to support the foundation’s work in the Roaring Fork Valley.

Including the unveiling and presentation of the Intersect Artist Awards, honoring Paul Nicklen and Jay Kelly as the Intersect Aspen Art + Design Fair Artists of 2026.

General Admission Opening: July 28, 5–7 p.m.
The Opening Day reception will also feature DJ Mayfly.

Resnick Center for Herbert Bayer Studies Tour: July 28, 12:30–1:30 p.m.
A guided tour exploring Herbert Bayer’s lasting influence on art and design.

Work in Progress: The Practice of Return with Leo Marmol: July 29, 2–3 p.m.
Leo Marmol, FAIA, of Marmol Radziner, reflects on creativity as an ongoing practice of making, discovery, and meaning.

Red Brick Center for the Arts: July 30, 10–10:45 a.m.
Aspen’s creative home invites guests for coffee, light treats, and an exhibition exploring infinity by four Colorado artists. With 10 artist studios, visitors can meet artists and experience Aspen’s arts community firsthand.

Aspen Film Screening: July 30, 6:30 p.m.
In partnership with Aspen Film, Intersect Aspen is honored to host a film screening of “Time and Other Materials” by Amie Knox, followed by a Q&A at the Isis Theatre. “Time and Other Materials” is a 60-minute documentary exploring the creative processes and inner lives of five prominent Colorado women artists: Rebecca DiDomenico, Stacey Steers, Martha Russo, Ana María Hernando, and Kim Dickey. Produced by Amie Knox and Chad Herschberger, it dives into their unique mediums, from animation and ceramics to large-scale sculpture.

About Tim and Dirk von Gal, owners of Intersect Aspen Art + Design:
In 2021, Tim and Dirk von Gal relaunched Aspen’s annual art fair, Art Aspen, as Intersect Aspen Art + Design Fair. The brothers are from Connecticut and now reside in Georgia. Both have a deep affinity for Aspen. Dirk worked as an Aspen ski instructor in the 1990s and Tim has been a long-time visitor to Aspen. When they were presented with the opportunity to relaunch the summer art event, they were honored to take on the project and have since given the fair new life and energy while expanding its programming.
